Arkwright Scholars interview the Engineer and Designer behind The Shard skyscraper

The STEM Leaders Award is one of the most exciting opportunities open to young aspiring engineers, scientists and designers to interview industry experts in a variety of technical disciplines.

At the end of February this year a team of 11 students, picked from schools across the UK, took up the STEM Leaders Award opportunity to interview two leading players in the design and construction of the magnificent Shard skyscraper in London – Kamran Moazami (Shard Project Director) and Ron Slade (Shard Design Director).

Amongst the 11 lucky students were five Arkwright Engineering Scholars:

Carolina from Giggleswick School, Arkwright Sponsor = ECITB
Owain from Queen Elizabeth School, Sponsor = The Brian Mercer Charitable Trust
Isabella from William Howard School, Sponsor = The Hadfield Trust
John from Merchant Taylors’ School, Sponsor = The Reece Foundation
Marcus from Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School, Sponsor = Atkins Limited
The student panel had a private interview session with Kamran and Ron at the Headquarters of WSP Group plc, the company that employs Kamran and Ron. During the interview the 11 students heard about the challenges associated with constructing such an iconic building, and were enthused about potential careers in the civil engineering sector.
